   The idea that exploration and research would be put in the hands of a   
   militaristic organization; that first contact with new races would be   
   done via heavily-armed warships; that a single ship would need a crew   
   of hundreds (don’t they have automation in the future?), yet there is   
   only a single “science officer” to manage the research and exploration
