   Yes, I've experienced that problem with tape heads many times!  I never paused   
   to think of the coercivity of the core material before, and your explanation   
   makes immediate sense.   
      
   I wonder, could the core be degaussed with a (large enough) version of a tape   
   head demagnetizer?  Furthermore, could such a procedure be even as desirable a   
   routine maintenance step in such transformers as it is in tape heads?  To   
   think of the    
   transformer in the same way as a tape head really drives the point home and I   
   wonder if such occurrences such as large transient spikes from circuit   
   interruption, or just everyday stray magnetic fields would be enough to   
   warrant some sort of periodic    
   degaussing of particularly sensitive transformer types.
