   i use apple maps without a data connection and it caches the map data,   
   at least for drives under 1 hour. i haven't tried it for longer drives   
   so i don't know what the exact limit is but it's never been an issue.   
      
   for longer drives, i don't use apple maps. i use a navigation app which   
   includes its own map data and/or a dedicated gps device, which also has   
   its own maps.
