   speed bumps can be a huge problem for emergency vehicles and also snow   
   plows if you live in a colder climate.   
      
   on the other hand, they can sometimes be counter productive. i remember   
   one in particular that was very annoying at 30 mph, but at 50 mph, it   
   was imperceptible.   
      
   not all work that way but that one definitely was, and it was in a   
   place where 50 was completely safe (one lane approach path between the   
   main road and a parking lot, with no other traffic).
