   using the cd/tape player also takes one's attention off the road.

   some people can manage using a phone and others can't. some people are   
   better drivers than others.

   so does having a conversation with a passenger. it's exactly the same   
   thing. having kids in the car can also be distracting.

   there's a difference between a reaction timer on the net and actual   
   driving, as well as whether a fraction of a second difference is going   
   to cause a crash.   
      
   cellphone usage has gone up dramatically over the last 10-20 years and   
   fatality rates have continued to drop. nobody wants to explain this   
   discrepancy. if cellphones were the hazard they're made out to be, then   
   the trend would have spiked back up, and it didn't.
