   Speed Limit signs in the USA are almost universally posted as revenue   
   generating devices and are intentionally set well below the correct speed   
   so that revenue generation can be maximized.   
      
   When the 55mph federal limit was abolished and states raised their speed   
   limits there were screams of outrage from the nannies blathering on   
   about how highway deaths would increase now that speed limits were   
   raised and that speed over 55mph were unsafe.   
      
   Trouble is, the roads became safer when the speed limits were raised.
