   A car can be driven just fine in 1st gear provided speed is kept down.   
   It's just nice to have the other gears to go faster but they are are   
   hardly a requirement. Thus it isn't necessary to shift to second, or one   
   could just pull over and stop, put the car into second gear and start   
   off again.... that way his hand doesn't have to leave steering   
   wheel while the car is in motion.
