XPost: sac.politics, talk.politics.guns, soc.culture.african.american       XPost: soc.culture.usa       From: racists@naacp.org              Two men face assault charges for the severe beating of a Grosse       Pointe Park man after a traffic collision in Detroit,       prosecutors announced Thursday.              Toriano Williams, 20, and Demond Willliams, 33, both of Detroit,       are accused of hitting and kicking Nate Szczerbinski, 34, the       afternoon of June 7, according to a news release from the Wayne       County Prosecutor’s Office. Police said they can’t confirm       whether the Williamses are related. The two hadn’t been arrested       by late morning, but police were seeking them, according to       Detroit police.              The collision happened after Szczerbinski realized he was       driving in the wrong direction on Vernor and attempted to turn       around at Chalmers. He said the crash was nearly head-on.       Prosecutors say all men exited their vehicles, and the       Williamses proceeded to attack Szczerbinski. The victim was       hospitalized for two days with a severely injured eye socket.              Szczerbinski said the men spat on him and taunted him with       racial slurs while beating him for about 20 minutes. The news       release didn’t include allegations of ethnic intimidation, but       Szczerbinski’s girlfriend said they “absolutely” should be       included.              “It was not right what they were saying,” Sarah Hines said. “To       be shouting the things they were when they were spitting on him       is completely unacceptable in itself.”              Szczerbinski, who is white, said the three men who attacked him       are black. About two to three witnesses who were at the scene       are included in the investigation, police spokeswoman Jennifer       Moreno said. Police have said a decision on charges of ethnic       intimidation would be left to prosecutors.              Asked whether allegations of ethnic intimidation are included       with the charges, prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Maria Miller       said in an e-mail that the charges are “based upon the facts and       evidence we are able to prove in court.”              The Williamses are both charged with assault with intent to do       great bodily harm and aggravated assault. Demond Williams is       also charged with driving with an expired license. Both are       expected to be arraigned today.              Detroit police say they’re also seeking a third man in the       beating.              Hines said the couple is glad to hear the men are facing       charges, and she hopes a third man is arrested. Szczerbinski is       “doing well,” continuing recovery, she said.              Before the crash, Szczerbinski said he visited the Texas Bar on       Kercheval, where he said he’d had a beer. Hines said that in       response to social media buzz, she wants people to know that       Szczerbinski was not drunk.              A Giveforward fund set up for Szczerbinski had raised more than       $1,000 by noon Thursday.              Several high-profile cases in metro Detroit the past few months       have involved assault allegations between one man and multiple       assailants.              Two months ago on Detroit’s east side, 54-year-old Steven Utash       of Clinton Township was severely beaten by a mob after hitting a       boy who’d darted in front of his truck near a gas station at       Morang and Balfour. Utash exited the truck to check on the boy,       and the group surrounded him. He was hospitalized for several       weeks before he was released.              Four men were charged in that attack and are to go on trial in       August. A 16-year-old was charged with assault and ethnic       intimidation, and his case was scheduled for trial Monday.              http://www.freep.com/article/20140612/NEWS02/306120134/Toriano-       Williams-Demond-Willliams-Detroit-assault-Nate-Szczerbinski              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
