Anyone know if that's true.              Thankfully in the ~12 years since the thread started many of the stupid and       down right ignorant assumptions related to safety and actual comfortable, safe       and engineering based travel speeds ver's political not science or engineering       based posted limits.              First as of today, The NMSL of 55 was and always will be irrelevant to the       actual safe, comfortable and engineering based speed across the US on our       coast to coast high/freeway system.              Knowing that today 42 states, 16 states have dropped the idea of political not       based in any real engineering or science based posted maximums. Raising their       posted maximum for optimal conditions to 70, 75 & 80 mph today on our coast to       coast highway/       freeway/interstate system!!!!!              Today only a few states in the north east, alaska & hawaii(60) have stuck to       this less than useless idea, something that 70+ years of DOT collected stats       say makes travel less safe of still having under posted political arbitrary       limits of 55/65.               55/65 is a speed based on a political idea not on engineering or safety. The       NMSL was always a limit which had no basis in design or engineering. NMSL       based posted maximums which in no way match what is the safe, comfortable and       engineering based maximum        actually is, 70+ years of DOT data says they do not improve safety.               These irrelevant to actual safe, comfortable and engineering based maximum       travel speeds in optimal conditions are ignored by all. including the police.       This fact gives these states no actual numerical limit on rural and urban       freeways. Other than what        speed drivers feel safe, comfortable that matches the engineering design today       of the freeways, highways and vehicles. In places which over the last few       years have raised the posted limit to match actual observed travel speeds, the       85th percentile speed,        !!no change in observed travel speeds has occurred!!!              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
