   St Jerome was one of the four doctors of the early Church, and his Latin   
   translation of the Bible was among his greatest works. On piatti da pompa he   
   is depicted either kneeling in the wilderness (with or without his lion), or   
   seen in close-up, gazing at    
   the crucified Jesus.26 In both versions Jerome holds a stone with which he   
   penitentially beats his bare chest in order to tame his sinful heart. In a   
   unique rendering of the scene, a woman in contemporary dress, identified by   
   name (VICENTIA), kneels in    
   prayer in front of Jerome in the wilderness [Fig. 8.12]; as a sign of her   
   humility she is depicted markedly smaller than the saint, a convention typical   
   of some early Renaissance religious paintings.27 This work is an unusual   
   document, as it inserts the    
   client into the work (via image and text), alludes to the devotional   
   relationship between the holy image and the viewer, and demonstrates that   
   Deruta piatti da pompa could be personalised.
