   The emancipation proclamation didn't free the slaves.  It took the US Army to   
   enforce it.  Several of the Union Generals were Democrats.   
      
   The Democratic party split during the war.  One faction of the Democrats   
   wanted to maintain the Union and formed a coalition party with the Republicans   
   called the National Union party.  The other faction were Confederate   
   sympathizers who were called the    
   copperheads.   
      
   There wasn't really much partisanship in the Confederacy.
