   One of my past cars had an infrared fob. It had a range of about 3 feet,

   Circuit-wise, it was probably less-complicated than an RF fob (and   
   receiver), and almost certainly totally immune to RF interference. Are   
   RF fobs not simply technology for technology's sake?
