   In the US, that isn't (wasn't) necessarily true.   
      
   My folks didn't have squat (my first summer job I made more than   
   either of them!).  But, merit scholarships, loans and my own labor   
   made it possible for me to go to school and pay off my loans the   
   day I got my degree.   
      
   By contrast, the bank president's son (from whom I got my "spare   
   application") didn't make the cut -- despite living in the "right"   
   area, having a nice big house, fancy cars, etc.  He just didn't   
   have the smarts!   
      
   (He likely would have had better luck at a place like Harvard)
