Interesting. Mine drops posts from folks whose posts I've not
read, in the past (which is a positive feedback loop -- if I've
NOT read their posts, then I won't be ABLE to read them once
   they are elided!)

The advantage to mailing lists is you can close off membership and
"enforce" policies. And, you know who is reading your comments
("by invitation only"). So, you tend to be more candid in your
discussions and revelations (no need to worry about google or
a competitor archiving your conversation and any materials
   exchanged therein).

I have a mailing list server that is "self moderated" -- any member
can move to boot mis-behavers from the list. It's an excellent
incentivizer to keep things on topic! (of course, someone had to
VOUCH for that person to get them on the list to begin with so
there is also that "silent pressure")

I mainly use it to automate access to my file archive; folks can
send a request for a file and the list server fetches it and
mails it *for* me (which allows me to avoid setting up a bastion
   host).

It's also good for planning our off-sites -- and, followups after
   they have occurred.
