You're absolutely right. But, the locations you mentioned likely aren't
interested in DEFECTIVE kit (by your own admission).

I can, of course, just leave them broken and maybe someone else with
skills, time and funds might opt to take on that task.

   Or, not.

   > If someone resells it, what's it to you?

I choose not to spend MY time (and monies) working for others'
profits. As how I spend my time is ENTIRELY my choosing, I can
set any arbitrary criteria on how it is spent.

[How many hours a week do you spend donating your time and monies
   for *others* to profit?]

I can, instead, let TVs head to the landfill (which is where they
would have headed in my absence -- treating that as an issue for the
local government to address with FEES on said disposals) and spend my
time on some other task with more desirable outcomes.

That's the great thing about charitable endeavors -- YOU decide how
your time is spent! And, there are hordes of folks looking for
any "hours" you'd care to donate! You can pick and choose, as you
deem appropriate, using whatever criteria are important to you.

The issue is "solved" even if it *is* in a landfill. I just decide that
it isn't something worthy of my time. The NEXT generation can tackle
the problem when they run out of places to dump the stuff (or, it
   leaches into the ground water).

I can spend that time reading a book for my own enjoyment!
