I designed the wire chamber electronics and signal processing for a
p-p collision experiment at CERN. I sat in on some physics meetings
and was impressed by the nastiness.

Wire chambers produce blinding-fast torrents of noisy data, with a
very rare event of interest. It's a challenge to, as we described it,
progressively enrich that flood of data.
