   I doubt that it would take a long time to read the rules into   
   MockMMA .. the conformance to the needed simplification and other   
   (non-patternish) stuff in MockMMA was not good enough, at least   
   last time I tried.   
   The version of pattern matching I was trying to add to Maxima   
   (which would certainly have more simplification -- but again   
   not identical in results to Mathematica...) was perhaps closer,   
   but I put that aside waiting for the version of Rubi that is   
   purely if-then-else...
