   There is a lot of room for improvement.  Whether it is 10,800x slower or   
   merely 1080x slower.

   If you read the maxima newsgroup you might find some explanations   
   there.  I find that stackoverflow  is not very illuminating. For example,   
   the answers to this question.   
   I think that if you use wxmaxima, then specifying  -l SBCL in the   
   edit/configure/maxima/additional parameters  will do it.   
   I think that stackoverflow people who suggest you have to recompile   
   everything are either out of date or   
   uninformed.
