   For those people who think that an Artificial Intelligence is   
   just around the corner, the failure of translation suggests   
   there is still a long way to go.   
      
     Last night I had dinner with a professional   
   translator/interpreter who speaks English, French, Hindi,   
   Bengali.   In the absence of any further context, I   
     asked her how she might interpret (say in a court   
   of law or a book)  a German phrase   
   that literally translated as "bringing owls to Athens".   
   She immediately replied that it sounded like the English   
   phrase "bringing coals to Newcastle."
