   I think you are referring to your example, in Maxima.

   load(grobner);
   poly_buchberger([(5+(5+a^2)*b-a*b^2)*t,(5*a^2*b-(a+4*a^2)*b^2)*(t-1)],[t,a,b]);

   which you think takes 328ms.

     I just ran it on my Maxima (5.40.0)/SBCL system. How to run in SBCL
   has been described earlier in this thread. Jan can do it.)

   To get a non-zero timing result I ran it 100 times for which it took
   0.359 seconds.

   for i:1 thru 100 do
   poly_buchberger([(5+(5+a^2)*b-a*b^2)*t,(5*a^2*b-(a+4*a^2)*b^2)*(t-1)],[t,a,b]);

   Or about 0.00359 seconds per run. Or 3.59 milliseconds.

   Anyone with a (free) copy of Maxima, started up in SBCL, can duplicate these
   timings on another computer.

   So the factor is, neglecting differences in CPU speed (maybe 2X?) ,
   something
   like 1593/3.59, or about 443X.  Not 5.

   ..............

   When one resorts to argumentum ad hominem it is a
   compliment to the quality of the opposing argument, and a sign
   of desperation on one's part.
