From: unk...@googlegroups.com              Research needed to combat modern-day health concerns: Experts               By Mariecar Jara-Puyod November 04, 2014                             Dubai: More studies that would hopefully result in more research and       development of medicines or health products must be undertaken to address the       seemingly endless discovery and increase of modern diseases.               Visiting surgeon-turned-scientist Prof Bengt Jeppson told The Gulf Today there       is more to be done in the scientific world in order that health problems       brought about by global booming population and climate change among other       factors would be resolved.               From the sidelines of the "Roundtable Media Discussion on Probiotics" on       Monday, he was asked of his opinion on the observation that even as great       advancements in science and technology have been achieved through the years,       the world is still burdened        with health concerns.               Swedish Jeppson said the development of new diseases far outpaces the progress       in science and technology and so medical and science experts must be involved       in more research and development.               The Lund University-Malmo University Hospital-Department of Surgery assistant       dean is in Dubai until Wednesday to promote a probiotics health supplement his       team had developed in 1994.               The pill has been proven to be beneficial through continuing global clinical       studies.               The former surgeon's interest in probiotics as a preventive treatment was so       since he had observed that majority of his patients, particularly those       suffering from Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS), need not undergo surgery if       their gut flora were protected        from harmful bacteria.               IBS is the chronic gastro-intestinal disorder characterised by stomach pain,       discomfort, bloating and alteration of bowel movement.               Saying that people "have more bacterial cells than human cells in their       bodies," Jeppson added that millions or even more of the former are lodged in       the gut flora.               Gut flora is the largest reservoir of microbes in the human body.               He told this reporter: "I call the stomach the big black box where bacteria       will simulate each other in the gut because they are a live culture." He       claimed probiotics, two of which are lacto bacilli and bifide bacteria       (present in breast milk), are        needed to fight the other living microbes in the gut flora.               Jeppson said people, "from the time of Homo Rectus even before the Homo       Sapiens" were oriented to eating live bacteria."               On the other hand, history has shown that probiotics, sourced from fermented       foods such as sauerkraut, lassi, raw yoghurt, buttermilk and vegetable pickles       which helped in maintaining intestinal health.               However, due to lifestyle changes, modernity, and alterations in diet and       nutrition, inflammatory illnesses like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes,       among others, arose.               Jeppson said: "Many inflammatory diseases have links to the changes in the gut       flora. We need to take probiotics every day."               Aside from maintaining a healthy balance in the gut flora, the other major       benefits of including high quality probiotics in the daily diet and nutrition       are:               * Aid in digesting food, particularly the hard-to-digest food and those, which       some people are more sensitive to.               * Enhance the Vitamin B synthesis and improve calcium absorption.               * Promote vaginal health in women.                      * Support the immune system.                      http://gulftoday.ae/portal/23b38543-8e73-425b-b16f-d7c1409c1dee.aspx              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
