More people fear dementia than stroke or heart disease, a survey found
Some people say the results show people are talking about dementia
People worry they won't be able to afford to care for their elderly relative
Care for dementia sufferers can cost from about £750 to £1,400 per week
Dementia is our most feared disease - overtaking cancer, strokes and heart
   disease, a survey has found.

The condition, which gradually destroys the sufferer's memory and personality,
is feared by a third of people aged over 55.

This compares to only a tenth who say they are afraid of suffering a stroke,
which is Britain's number four killer.

And only four per cent who say they are afraid of heart disease - the
country's number one cause of death.

However some people say these new findings are positive in that they show
people are now talking about dementia, which until recently has been
   considered a taboo subject.

Dominique Kent, from The Live-In Homecare Information Hub, a coalition of 13
of the UK's leading home care companies said: 'For decades, dementia in all
its forms was the great unspoken.

'But thanks to people like author Terry Pratchett, who has been very open with
his personal experiences of the condition, people are far more willing to talk
   openly about it.

'However, while breaking the taboo is leading to more people feeling
comfortable about discussing dementia, it means it's overtaken cancer as the
biggest fear for the older age group in the UK.'

But while there is increased fear surrounding the subject, over half admitted
they feel more comfortable talking about the condition than they did 10 years
   ago.

Worldwide, 35.6 million people have dementia and there are 7.7 million new
cases every year, according to the World Health Organisation.

The total number of people with dementia in the UK is forecast to rise to
940,110 by 2021 and 1,735,087 by 2051, an increase of 38 per cent over the
   next 15 years.

   order to raise awareness
The devastation dementia wrecks upon relationships, lifestyles and family
finances makes it a far greater worry than any other illness.

Respondents' main concern about dementia is they fear they would resent their
elderly relatives or be unable to afford to care for them properly.

While people are clearly talking more about dementia, it appears they do not
know what to do - or where to turn - when the time comes to explore care
   options.

According to the survey, just a third would seek advice from their GP and less
than a quarter would talk to any other health professional.

And while 60 per cent would discuss it with their family, 40 per cent would
not talk it through with the person going into care.

Care for dementia sufferers can cost from about £750 to £1,400 per week, but
according to the report just under two per cent of people actually spoke to a
financial advisor to see how they could manage the cost.

Ms Kent urges more people to consider what they might do to help their elderly
relatives and themselves, giving them time to research their options.

She said: 'People are clearly blundering into care.

'Our Live-in Homecare Information Hub members are noticing families are
leaving care planning later and later these days and are often at crisis point
with a parent or elderly relative before they start looking around and have no
   time to research the
   options properly.
