Vascular Dementia - Its Nature, Symptom, and Treatment

Another name given to vascular dementia is multi-infarct dementia. The
disorder is characterized by destruction of brain tissues as a result of a
   brain stroke, that is either:

A few massive brain strokes or
Several number of small brain strokes combined
Among other common facts related to vascular dementia or multi-infarct
   dementia include:

A number of successive brain strokes mainly result in vascular or
   multi-infarct dementia
Such distinct types of brain strokes tend to commonly occur in men and it
often develops in people who are at or above the age of 70
Among the commonly recognized risk factors for developing vascular dementia
   are included:
Hypertension or high blood pressure and
   Diabetes
Both these disorders tend to cause vaascular or multi-infarct dementia for
they primarily affect or damage blood vessels of the brain. In addition,
vascular dementia is also much more likely to develop in people who either
have smoked in the past or are
   smoking.

Brain strokes that result in development o multi-infarct or vascular dementia
   tend to:

Partially or completely destroy brain tissues through blocking the blood
   supply reaching the brain
Areas of the brain that commonly gets to be destroyed due to such brain
   strokes are called infarcts
Relatively minor brain strokes cause very little or no immediate muscle
   weakness and
Such minor brain strokes are much less likely to cause paralysis as that
commonly results as a consequence of massive brain strokes

Among the striking differences between dementia resulting from Alzheimer's
disease and multi-infarct or vascular dementia are:

The latter may progress in clearly distinct stages or steps
Symptoms and conditions of vascular dementia tend to worsen suddenly only to
show little improvements at latter times, often followed with worsening
effects a few months or years later as a consequence of another brain stroke
In addition, vascular or multi-infarct dementia can also show such visible
symptoms that commonly possess close similarities with other dementias, which
   commonly may include:

   Memory loss
Increasing difficulty in accomplishing simple tasks and
Increasing tendency of the affected person to wander off
Although such is the case, most people affected with vascular or multi-infarct
dementia are less likely to suffer from changes in their:

   Judgement and
   Personality
As is well understood and known, such changes are much more likely to occur in
people affected with Alzheimer's disease. In addition, common symptoms of
vascular or multi-infarct dementia may also cause wide variations in observed
   symptoms. Such specific
and wide-ranging changes brought about by vascular dementia tend to depend
entirely on specific area of the brain that is destroyed or is affected.

Since it is much more likely that brain strokes tend to affect or destroy only
a small area of brain tissues contained in only small area of the brian,
impairment of few specific aspects of mental function do not occur.

Few simple and seeingly slight symptoms neurologic symptoms that result from
tiny or small brain strokes can help doctors identify vascular or
multi-infarct dementia. Among common symptoms of vascular or multi-infarct
   dementia are included:

   Partial loss of vision
   Slow and slurred speech
   Muscle weakness
   Paralysis in one leg and
Increasing inability and difficulty in walking
Specific treatment options and measures that are used to deal with vascular or
multi-infarct dementia are mostly the same as those used in treatment of all
kinds of dementia. Rate of advance in vascular or multi-infarct dementia can
   be forced to slow
down or even stop and sometimes the whoel condition can be prevented through
   treating disorders such as:

   Diabetes and
Hypertension or abnormally high blood pressure
In addition, people should be adviced to quit smoking, either to treat or
   prevent vascular or multi-infarct dementia.

There are no specific treatment regimens available for positively dealing with
vascular or multi-infarct dementia, although anticoagulant drugs are commonly
provided in few people who have had a brain stroke to prevent successive and
   further brain
   strokes.

In order to prevent successive brain strokes from occurring as a result of
blood clot formation due to arrhythmia or abnormal heart rhythm, a common
anticoagulant called warfarin is often used. On the other hand, people who had
   experienced several
strokes as a consequence of constriction of blood vessels that supply the
heart with blood can take aspirin to deal with their condition.
