   Unlocking the Microbiome to Find Breakthrough Solutions That Promote Health   
   Our focus is on accelerating the translation of the compelling science of the   
   microbiome into breakthrough solutions that promote health.  To achieve this,   
   we are partnering with leaders and visionaries across the microbiome landscape   
   to spark    
   transformative medical innovation.   
   The Janssen Human Microbiome Institute (JHMI), part of Janssen Research &   
   Development, LLC is focused on understanding the unique and crucial role that   
   the microbiota - the diverse population of bacteria living in and on the human   
   body - plays in    
   wellness and disease.  The group seeks to accelerate the translation of   
   science into therapeutic targets and diagnostic capabilities that have the   
   potential to transform human health.   
      
   Microbiome science is at a turning point, quickly emerging and demonstrating   
   essential links and opportunities in specific diseases, including autoimmune   
   conditions, cancer, diabetes and certain infectious diseases.  The JHMI is   
   building a team of expert    
   scientists, as well as matching internal capabilities with complementary   
   external collaborators and entrepreneurs to accelerate microbiome innovation   
   around the world.   
      
   Operating through anchor research centers in Cambridge, Massachusetts and   
   Beerse, Belgium, the JHMI is supporting the development of exciting programs   
   like the live microbial therapeutic product currently in early development   
   that the Janssen Immunology    
   Therapeutic Area licensed earlier this year, while building micr   
   biome-specific discovery and development capabilities.   
      
   The JHMI prioritizes disease areas of focus based upon the following criteria:   
      
   Observation: A link between dysbiosis (a microbial imbalance on or inside the   
   body) and disease has been observed in humans   
   Intervention: Evidence that disease or disease symptoms have potential to be   
   alleviated by altering the microbiome   
   Partner: There are one or more collaborators that JHMI can partner with to   
   accelerate the investigation and development of solutions
