Interesting, but not surprising. Put this phenomenon on the same list
as the strains of malaria that are now resistant to all known drugs we
used over the past 40 years to control or prevent it. I've spent about
20 of the past years living in malarial countries, so I'm well aware of
what malaria can do to you. But I haven't taken the drugs - imagine
what 20 years of anti-malarials must do to your liver. Well, that and a
   lot of scotch ...

We may well look back at the period 1940-2020 as some sort of momentary
lull in our otherwise losing struggle against diseases and critters.
And anyway, ecological science shows that any creature that
overpopulates its ecosystems eventually attracts the notice of predators
that gain in strength to try to restore balance to the system.

Everyone else is looking skyward for the asteroid that will end modern
civilization. I think it will be an insect and some rapidly-transmitted
   disease.
