   I've had that experience too - it's interesting when things you   
   typically use to orient yourself no longer appear.  Find an old enough   
   map and the waterways start to become more important, the towns nature   
   of the place starts to make more sense.  You can give yourself the   
   same disorientation by flipping the map upside down, etc.
