There's a good book called _The Shallows_ that's related as well:
discusses how the information overload and ensuing temptation to
multi-task, eschew deep thinking in lieu of shallow skimming has changed
our brain patterns. Few people actually manage to shut it all out to
concentrate deeply on a particular subject of interest, and that's
generally a bad thing. There's a missing, conclusive link, but the
author shows that brain patterns can indeed be changed, then shows the
trends, and leaves you to connect the dots. That's not totally fair,
but it will take a generation to see the effect.

If that's true, the "meme generation" is screwed. They can't even
communicate with words anymore, as far as I can tell. Spend a day on
http://imgur.com and see what I mean. Funny stuff, but deep thinking it
is not, especially when the "community" has settled on certain pictures
to represent certain emotions, characters, or reactions. Maybe it's all
in jest and I'm getting old, or maybe these kids don't know how to think
   deeply for themselves anymore.
