   Toured NREL (natl renewable energy lab) recently and one of the labs was   
   basically doing these sorts load balancing tests using multiple sets of   
   the usual appliances for load simulation.  Personally I'd like to see   
   more effort made towards retrofitting structures with things like Trombe   
   walls and other direct solar applications.  Passive solar has been   
   around for decades, is technically simple and robust and yet we seem to   
   keep building structures that need space heating/cooling most of the   
   time, and keep heating large tanks of water 24/7.
