Breaking "bad habits" may be the ticket, and getting on a schedule.

I've experienced sleep depravation on the extreme side. When I finally
went to bed, I was out for about 24 hours, then got up and ate
something, and back to bed for some 12 hours. It takes about a month
   to get back to normal.

When I work 12+ hour days for say a week or two, I'm soundly asleep in
bed but I perceive more sleep is needed.
