   How does a loupe work, the wellknown "magnifying glass"?   
      
   there are two operating modes:   
      
   distant from eye   
   near to the eye   
      
   the eyeglasses we wear operate in the second mode.   
      
   the formulas for the "apparent magnification" are different   
   in the two modes.
