Obligatory mention that CR39 was first chosen and very profitably
exploited for eyeglass lenses by Robert K. Graham, who went on to use
some of his wealth to found the (in)famous Nobel sperm bank.

But no one is answering my core question: Does it really cost anywhere
near $500 to manufacture a pair of decent quality progressive eyeglass
lenses? (and several hundred dollars to manufacture a reasonable quality
   eyeglass frame?)

Or is that one specific area where a _lot_ of excess cost and undeserved
profits could be squeezed out of our health care system? (As I'm coming
   to believe is the case.)
