Back then, most globes, half globes, smoke globe housings, etc, were
fake. Cheaper to jes put in a bogus housing than actually set up a
real camera system. Oh, we did that also, with big reel-to-reel video
recorders, 35mm still cameras, etc, but then it got expensive. Now,
it's dog bone cheap to do a very complex install. An old computer
running linux and a handfull of cheapo wired cameras and voilą, a full
   security system.

Yer laundromat may be an old dummy setup or could be the real deal.
It's not uncommon for dirtbags to take a crowbar to the coin boxes.
We have a local laundromat with a few oversized washers that cost up
to $5 per load. Now were talking some serious money in those coin
boxes. Maybe to prevent drug dealers or homeless ppl from camping
out. There's a lotta money invested in laundromat equipment and most
are unstaffed. An owner would have to a complete idiot to NOT install
   a video system.
