I went to school for electronics, so understand your analogy
   quite well.

But what I wanted to mention is how interesting it is that
nature tends to reuse the same equations all over the place.

I've also encountered the same in my other interest, seismology.
The way in which seismic waves travel through, are reflected,
and refracted in the earth by different geographic layers are
very much like optics. (although, there's more than just transverse
and longitudinal waves - notably Rayleigh and Love waves)

The equations also apply for a tsunami travelling the ocean.
In this case, the depth of the water column is analogous to
the impedence of the medium. They reflect off of and refract
around lower impedence areas (shallows and islands).

   Mother Nature is smart.
