The 46 formal claims don't seem to mention anything special about the fiber
used. Is there a particular portion of the patent's detailed discription
   suggesting graded-index fibers are used?

In any event, the use of graded-index fiber to transmit images is an old idea
which pre-dates the patent and was found to be unsatisfactory.
