|    White light scanner optics when a mirror    |
|    01 Apr 13 21:32:36    |
From: wesleymccombe@gmail.com              Hi All,       I'm not an optics expert just an engineer with an optics problem:              I am trying to transform the scanning angle of an off the shelf White Light       Scanner using a 45deg mirror. The Scanner consists of a Projector and 2 Video       cameras all mounted next to each other.              The reason for the mirror is a want to be able to place a foot, or a hand on a       glass pane and have it scanned using this white light scanner. The Depth of       field for the scanner is 400mm so to do this without a mirror makes the box       over 500mm high. Not        practical for my use.              The plan is to build an open face cube cabinet with a mirror at 45degree angle       down the middle. The top face will have optical grade glass where the object       to scan will sit (a foot for instance). The optical grade mirror below will       translate the image        into the horizontal direction. The white light scanner would be positioned to       focus it's depth of field over the front face surface.              Problems I can see:       1. The projector is a set of divergent light beams, the mirror is out of       plane by 45deg so the resulting image once it hits the scan plane will be       distorted (will this be enough to cause a significant effect??).       2. The returning image should be ok, the light is essentially parallel       reflections, right?       3. I don't want to mess with the Scanners calibration but possibly this would       compensate for the distortion caused in item 1? Is it worth a shot or am I       missing something fundamental here?       4. Can't use a lens to make the projection parallel given the camera shares       the same optical path.              I have an image of the Scan box I designed but I can't find a way to upload       it. Any help would be most appreciated.              Regards,       Wes              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
