   I do this two ways: 1) Non-sequential mode, and 2)sequential mode. I think you   
   want to consider non-sequential.    
      
   1) For non-sequential mode: I do this trick... that is not perfect but close   
   enough. I use the "source diode" and let the VCSEL be described as an array of   
   square emitters without astigmatism. Input the FWHM per the ZEMAX manual...   
   this works well.   
      
   2) For sequential mode: I solve for the embedded gaussian beam and M^2 per   
   Siegman to get the basic propagation characteristics.    
      
   1) is better for imaging etc. you can see the array on the detector.    
   2) is better for propagating the total beam as a single beam... IE. for   
   free-space illumination.
