   Have you done a careful photon budget?  It would be pretty rare to need   
   an APD for a consumer application.  If you spend less than the price of   
   one ordinary Hamamatsu photodiode, you can get a copy of my book.   
   Chapter 1 is all about photon budgets, and has lots of examples.
