   Well a bolometer would be kinda fun to make, but I see all sorts of messy   
   details.  (ambient temperature changes for one.)  I guess one could make a   
   balanced design.. a second reference bolometer that you drive to get zero   
   temperature difference.   
      
   A photodiode and DMM (ammeter) is just some much easier.
