   What underlies compulsive self-destructivity and destructivity in   
   general? Arguably, it is unconsciously therapeutic  and it also   
   functions a means to avoid psychological regression. There is also a   
   collective form, which comes to expression as the self-destruction of   
   cultic groups or whole nations.
