The       residents underwent cognitive testing every three years; all were       dementia-free when they first entered the study. Study participants were       rated via a point system on the frequency with which they participated in       seven cognitive activities that required participants to process       information. Those activities were watching television, listening to the       radio, reading newspapers, reading magazines, reading books, playing games       (playing cards or checkers or doing crosswords or other puzzles) and going       to museums.              Over the course of the study, 614 of the participants showed no cognitive       impairment, 395 developed mild cognitive impairment and 148 developed       Alzheimer’s disease.              Of those who developed Alzheimer’s disease during the study, researchers       found that participants who had higher levels of those seven cognitive       activities during the study period showed slower rates of cognitive decline       prior to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. In other words, those       who spent more time in cognitive activities and later developed Alzheimer’s       had more years free of disease symptoms than those who had lower scores on       those specific cognitive activities. In fact, for each additional point       scored on cognitive activities, study participants showed a 52% annual       reduction in the rate of cognitive decline...              http://www.e-seniorservices.com/blog/brain-exercise-delays-alzhe       mers-symptoms.html              Play chess!              M.
