   With respect to the median, generally, yes; on the mean, well, it   
   depends.  Once again, scientists investigate outliers ALL the time!!   
   They typically do not "write them off" unless it is clear that a prosaic   
   explanation exists to explain them (background noise, calibration   
   errors, human error, etc.)
