     He and a team of scientists that included APL's Andy Cheng planned the   
     basic science. New Horizons would be a fly-by reconnaissance mission;   
     to go into orbit around the planet, the speeding spacecraft would have   
     to slam on the brakes so hard it would need a thousand times more fuel   
     for thrusters than it could carry.
