XPost: sci.space.shuttle              If I understand correctly, the real issue is that it's very difficult to       find ways to dump all that excess energy more slowly. Aerodynamic braking       is just about the only technique available, and if it is done more       gradually (i.e., at a shallower angle), the vehicle tends to just bounce       back out into space in some semi-random trajectory.              Have there been any attempts to make a more gradual, controlled re-entry       that heats less and doesn't bounce?              /kenw              Ken Wallewein       K&M Systems Integration       Phone (403)274-7848       Fax (403)275-4535       kenw@kmsi.net       www.kmsi.net              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
