   yes because a) thermal conduction into liquid via gas is faster than   
   through chamber walls and b) the evaporating surface area is larger and   
   c) if the vapour pressure of the distillate is very low so there is free   
   molecular flow (pv=nRt doesn't apply) the vapour next to the surface can   
   be swept away reducing reabsorption see diffusion pump
