   BHU students launch movement to save trees

   Varanasi: Students of Banaras Hindu University --   
   associated with 'Srishti Sanrakshnam', a forum for   
   ecological conservation -- began 'Chipko Movement' on the   
   campus on Saturday to save the green trees from felling.   
   They alleged that hundreds of trees are being cut in the   
   name of construction of cancer centre on the campus.   
   However, the university administration denied the   
   allegation.   
      
   "Noticing tree felling on a large scale, we decided to   
   begin Chipko movement to save green trees," said the   
   group leader Pintu Kumar, whose group has so far planted   
   800 trees on the campus in the last seven years. The   
   labourers engaged in tree cutting were stopped. "We will   
   stick to the trees if further attempts are made to cut   
   them," he said, adding that their demand included   
   immediate stop on tree felling, plantation of trees to   
   compensate the loss, and formation of a committee   
   involving students and teachers to address such a   
   situation. Cutting green trees for construction of   
   buildings is not a wise step. In a couple of days about   
   150 trees of peepal, baniyan, mango, sheesham, neem were   
   cut, he said.
