XPost: alt.global-warming              NASA has updated its GISTEMP data series to the end of Sept 2020.              It finds global avg temps for the month were +1.0C above the avg temps       of the 1950-80 baseline making is the warmest Sept in 141 years of       reliable global temp data.              In the N Hem things were even warmer at +1.21 above the baseline for       the hemisphere. But, amazingly, that only scored 3rd place in the       series after 2016 (El Nino year) and 2019.              The S Hem was a bit cooler at only .79C above the C20, ranking #3/141.              The YTD average for each region is starting to cement 2020 into the #2       position for top10 warmest years known reliably. For the globe the       avg JAN-SEPT surf temp was 1.05C above the C20, the NH is +1.36C above       the baseline, and the SH has averaged .74C -- all ranking #2/141 for       each region.              The various top 10 lists are now:              Septs:              Globe:              Year Anom (1/100th C)       2020 100       2019 93       2016 91       2014 88       2015 86       2018 81       2013 78       2017 78       2009 73       2012 72              N Hem       2016 123       2019 122       2020 121       2015 117       2017 101       2018 97       2005 90       2012 86       2009 85       2014 84              S Hem       2014 92       2013 85       2020 79       2008 65       2018 65       2019 65       2002 63       2009 62       2016 61       2012 59              JAN-SEPT YTD avgs:              Globe:       Year Avg anom (1/100th C)       2016 106.2       2020 105.0       2019 96.8       2017 93.4       2018 83.2       2015 83.1       2014 74.8       2010 74.8       2007 70.6       2005 66.8              N Hem:       2016 138.8       2020 136.1       2019 118.6       2017 116.6       2015 110.3       2018 102.1       2010 91.3       2014 91.2       2007 86.7       2005 82.7              S Hem:       2019 74.7       2020 74.0       2016 73.9       2017 70.0       2018 64.2       2010 58.7       2014 58.4       2009 57.7       1998 57.6       2015 56.9              --       Upcoming events:       14 Oct 2020 Sept Global Release SOTC NOAA              Peabody Energy Corporation       NYSE:BTU - 13 Oct, 2:58 pm GMT-4       1.75 -0.17 (8.83%) *** down 8.8% ***              Funds dry up for flood levee protecting 1,500 properties that's been on the       table for nearly 30 years       ABC Capricornia, 14 Oct 2020 01:22Z       Thought to have its funding secured in 2018, the South Rockhampton Flood       Levee -- designed to protect 1,500 properties -- could be stalled by       redirecting its funds.              Coronavirus pandemic the final blow in decision to close Adelaide's 'iconic'       West End brewery       ABC News, 13 Oct 2020 at 11:53pm       Lion blames falling beer sales caused by consumers choosing other drinks,       like wine, and the coronavirus pandemic hitting draught beer sales for its       decision to close Adelaide's West End brewery.              BREAKING (14 Oct): Victoria has recorded 7 new virus infections and 5       deaths from the disease in the past 24 hrs. The piece notes that the IMF has made a       quarter of its total lending, $250bn, available to support nations,       but, in advice it offers alongside the financial support, "it       implicitly backs fossil fuel subsidies that risk putting countries on       a polluting pathway". The story comes after the IMF described existing       policies to reduce emissions as "grossly insufficient to date",       according to the Guardian. The newspaper notes that the international       body has called for a combination of carbon pricing and an "initial       green stimulus" to help recover from the pandemic.              Record-setting climate enabled the extraordinary 2020 fire season in the       western US       Global Change Biology       Record-setting temperatures set the stage for this year's       unprecedented fire season in the western US, scientists write in a       letter. The authors say: "The 2020 fire season in the western United       States (the West) has been staggering: over 2.5 mn hectares have       burned as of 31 Sept, including over 1.5m ha in California (3.7%       of the state), in part from 5 of the 6 largest fires in state       history; over 760,000 ha have burned in Oregon and Washington, most       occurring within a few-day period."              Projections of mountain snowpack loss for wolverine denning elevations       in the Rocky Mountains       Earth's Future       Wolverines in the Rocky Mountains could be threatened by declining       snow cover in future decades, a study says. The study uses       high-resolution projections of snowpack change under several future       warming scenarios to assess how it could affect wolverine denning       sites. The research shows that many low-elevation denning sites could       see large reductions in snowpack under any degree of future warming.              The world's largest tropical wetland has become an inferno       Catrin Einhorn, Maria Magdalena Arréllaga, Blacki Migliozzi and Scott       Reinhard, The New York Times              The Arctic is in a death spiral.
