XPost: alt.global-warming              With today's update to HadCRUT the major data series I scrape have       (mostly) reported for Sept 2020.              Remote Sensing is still "out" (web config error 500 -- maybe related       to wanting everyone to register to see the data now) and Cowtan & Way       haven't updated since the start of the pandemic in Apr.              Apart from those the summary of the year-to-dates for each series is       as follows:              Data series Rank Value #Months       nhtsdsst 1 136.1 9       glbtsdsst 1 105.0 9       cru4krig 1 1.7885 4       hadcrut4nh 1 1.1650 9       aravgNH 1 1.0452 9       had4krig 1 1.0013 4       hadsst_nh 1 0.8517 9       jma 1 0.4756 9       shtsdsst 2 74.0 9       rsstlt4 2 0.8247 8       hadcrut4 2 0.8167 9 <-- ~median       aravg 2 0.7063 9       hadsst 2 0.6191 9       uah_globe6NH 2 0.5722 9       uah_globe6SH 2 0.4456 9       uah_globe6 3 0.5078 9       aravgSH 3 0.3506 9       seaice.extent 4 10.5122 18       hadcrut4sh 5 0.4698 9       hadsst_sh 6 0.4071 9       piomas.vol 9 15.3119 9              Many series are showing 2020 Jan-Sept are at record levels. The       leading one is probably NASA GISTEMP for the global surf temps showing       the world is more than +1C above the mid 20th cent avgs. NOAA's       NOAATEMP (aravg) is showing a 2nd place at +.71C above their ~1980s       baseline. (Together pointing at 70% of the post-industrial warming       coming in just the past 40y -- an acceleration that's been obvious in       the detailed numbers for the past 30y or so).              Hadley's HadCRUT is pointing at a No 2 place as well at +.82C above       their ~1980s (1961-90) baseline. Some experts, incl some that work for       the UK Met, say that might be related to the HadCRUT's weaker coverage       of the polar areas which are seeing a lot more warming that the       temperate zones.              Even the UAH's LT6 series all report a 2020 YTD avg ranking around       2nd-place in the sat record.              The surprising laggards at the Arctic seaice measures at 10.5 mn km2       of avg NH seaice extent and 1531 km3 avg seaice volume (i.e. very       roughly an avg thickness YTD around 1.46m). This situation is       certainly not what is reported day by day by other agencies that are       showing daily records for large swathes of the N Hem including Laptev       Sea/Siberian coast where past melt records are begetting new and       bigger melt records as the local albedo apparently is dropping a few       basis points.              --       Upcoming events:       14 Oct 2020 Sept Global Release SOTC NOAA              The end of the eternal snows: Integrative mapping of 100 years of       glacier retreat in the Venezuelan Andes       Arctic, Antarctic and Alpine Research       Glacier cover in Venezuela decreased by 98% between 1952 and 2019, new       research finds. It will soon become the first Andean country to lose       its glaciers entirely, the research adds. By recreating maps of       Venezuela's glacier cover stretching back to 1910, the research also       finds that glacier retreat rates increased after 1998, reaching a       maximum retreat rate between 2016 and 2019. The authors say: "These       new maps should provide an essential tool for biophysical, ecological,       and historical studies and a key reference for promoting awareness on       climate change in the tropical Andes, where glaciers are intimately       linked with cultural identity."              Brussels `won't stand in the way' of new nuclear plants, says EU climate chief       Frédéric Simon, EurActiv              Fears over 'weakening' of UK green watchdog       Roger Harrabin, BBC News              Oil traders braced for balancing act in wake of US election       David Sheppard, Financial Times              China races ahead in electric vehicles       James Kynge, Financial Times              ESB offers #75m to help businesses cut greenhouse gas emissions       The Irish Times              Powering up!
