|    National Punctuation Day (24 September)    |
|    24 Sep 24 21:35:00    |
From: benlizro@ihug.co.nz              ??! Didn't we have this one before? (No, I'm not going to go back and       check.)              Founded 2003 by Jeff Rubin, an American consultant on writing and       design, "to increase public awareness of the importance of correct       punctuation."              I'm wondering just what the founding act consisted of? Sending out a       press release? Notifying the National "National Day" Bureau?              Crystal: "It's remarkable how punctuation -- along with spelling -- has       achieved such an important role as an index of educability and stylistic       mastery."              "Part of the problem is that the English punctuation system isn't       simple, as its evolution has resulted in many variations and       exceptions." Hmm. Sounds just like spelling.              "My feeling is that it would be more helpful, in the long term, to spend       the day exploring the history of punctuation rather than going out with       cameras to find errors, or with marker pens to correct them."              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
