From: benlizro@ihug.co.nz              Now there's a name that was once familiar.       Born Surrey, 1890. Served in WWI.       First novel, _The Secret Battle_ (1919)       Trained as lawyer, though never practised.       Independent Member of Parliament 1935-1950.       Wrote a great deal, many things for _Punch_.       Lots more at       https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._P._Herbert       including his youthful image on what appears to be a cigarette card.       And his eccentric but real service in WWII.       And this list of "Styles":               1890–1914: Mr Alan Patrick Herbert        1914–1914: Ordinary Seaman A. P. Herbert        1914–1914: Able Seaman A. P. Herbert        1914–1915: Acting Leading Seaman A. P. Herbert        1915–1918: Sub-Lieutenant A. P. Herbert RNVR        1918–1935: Mr A. P. Herbert CH              Oh yes, he wrote some things about language (usage, new words).              --- SoupGate-DOS v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
