   It's an abbreviated form of "modulator-demodulator".   
      
   Bing agrees with you, BTW. So perhaps things changed since I heard   
   last heard it pronounced. Which was probably 30-40 years ago.   
      
   The long "o" seemed to me to follow from the spelling, so it is   
   possible that others felt the same way. And eventually prevailed.
